Editorial Director (Fiction)
Think Selection is working with an ambitious, fast growing independent publishing company to recruit an Editorial Director or Senior Commissionng Editor to lead the acquisitions of a new commercial and literary fiction list.
This is a rare opportunity to take full editorial ownership of a list at an agile, growing publishing company, where editorial judgement genuinely matters.
The successful candidate will acquire and publish a high-profile fiction list that will sit alongside an already established nonfiction programme.
You’ll be responsible for identifying and acquiring a curated list of fiction titles, shaping the direction of the list from the outset, and publishing books with clear commercial intent. You’ll work directly with literary agents, negotiate acquisitions, and attract authors to a new publishing home.
Editorially, you will guide each book from acquisition through to publication, ensuring manuscripts are developed to a high standard. You will take full responsibility for editorial quality, working closely with internal colleagues and external freelancers, and you’ll play an active role in campaign planning alongside publicity and marketing colleagues.
You’ll also bring informed market insight into publishing discussions, tracking fiction trends to help refine the programme as it develops.
This role would suit a hands-on commissioner with experience of making successful fiction acquisitions and the confidence to build a list from the ground up within a focused publishing team.
The position is full time and hybrid with two days per week in central London offices. The salary will depend on experience, reflecting the client’s interest in meeting established fiction commissioners as well as candidates building their acquisitions experience.
